Our sources of inspiration
Botswana is the oldest democracy on earth. Using the Kgotla, its leaders are able to listen to the views of all 1.8 million inhabitants over a period of six months. This advice, information and criticism is used by the president to take decisions which are embraced and supported by the population at large.
The power of the workforce
Martijn de Liefde was inspired to set up The Kgotla Company in February 2003 because of his experience with Kgotlas in Botswana. He realised leaders take decisions much more easily if they harness the expertise of everyone that decision will affect. Leaders and their workers inspire each other and decisions are supported by the entire community.
We want to help leaders and their communities reach concrete decisions on the basis of open dialogue – without endless debate and discussion. This not only strengthens the position of the leader, but frees the leader to realise his or her full potential and to help the community itself to do the same.
